Calm, clear guidance for everyday household money
Crestline Money publishes practical guides on budgeting, saving, borrowing and credit for UK households. We write in plain British English and explain any term the first time it appears.
General information only. Everything on this site is educational. It does not take your personal circumstances into account and is not personalised advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any product. Check official sources and consider speaking to a regulated adviser before making decisions about your money. See our financial disclaimer for details.
Where to start
- Build a simple budget. Write down your take-home pay, essential bills and everyday spending each month, then compare the two.
- Set up an emergency fund. This is cash you can reach quickly for unexpected costs. Many people aim for a few months of essential spending, but the right amount depends on your situation.
- Understand your credit file. Credit reference agencies such as Experian, Equifax and TransUnion hold information about how you use credit. You can request your own file, usually free of charge.
Free tools
- Budget planner: sort your monthly income and outgoings into clear categories.
- Loan / EMI calculator: EMI means equated monthly instalment, the fixed monthly payment on a loan. Use it to see what a loan could cost over its term.
- Savings goal: work out how much to set aside each month to reach a target by a chosen date.
- Credit card payoff: see how long a balance could take to clear at different monthly payments, including interest.
Results from our tools are estimates based on the figures you enter. They are not quotes from any lender.
Savings and protection
Some UK savings and investment products are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which may pay compensation if an authorised firm fails. Cover limits and eligibility vary, so check the current details on the FSCS website. Cash ISAs and other tax-free savings accounts have their own rules, so read the terms carefully.
How we earn money
Crestline Money may earn affiliate commission when you click some links and take up a product or service. This does not change the price you pay. We aim to explain costs, limits and trade-offs in every guide, and we do not rank providers as the best or number one.
